By now, basic techniques have become so widely adopted in everyday life that we can no longer do without them. Most modern systems use essentially the same OCR mechanism. Just think about self-driving cars or cameras for recognizing video images. Despite now being used for such modern things, this technology is also still the basis for optimizing administrative processes. But that does not mean that OCR software is standing still. It is precisely in the administrative area that developments are rapid. Therefore, in this blog we address the question: what is the next step in the field of OCR software?

OCR tools and systems: from template recognition to training functions

The very first OCR tools worked on the basis of template recognition. You told the system what a document looked like, and the next time this same type of document was presented, the OCR software could automatically read it. A hugely useful functionality that automated recurring operations. But the need soon arose for a solution that could also be used for documents with more variation. That’s where free-form recognition came in, a technique that uses the power of computers to distill certain information. For example, an OCR tool running on this system sees a certain letter combination with date format text above it, then concludes that this is an invoice date. This type of OCR software required significantly less maintenance. However, the drive for optimization continued. The end user now wanted to be able to optimize the recognition himself. This gave rise to the introduction of training functions. With this type of OCR tool, employees in financial administration could train and improve their own systems the moment they discovered an error. It was no longer necessary to wait for a consultant.
