Peppol Access Point: what exactly is it and what does it do?

More and more organizations are switching to e-invoicing. Not only because it is faster and more efficient, but also because more and more governments and companies demand it as standard. Whether you work at a large company, are an SME or are responsible for financial administration: if you work with digital invoices, sooner or later you will come across Peppol. But what exactly is Peppol? How does it work? And why choose a Peppol Access Point?

What is Peppol?

Peppol stands for Pan-European Public Procurement Online. It is an international network that enables secure and standardized exchange of e-invoices and other electronic documents between companies and (semi-)governments in Europe and beyond.

Peppol ensures that:

  • Invoices go securely and directly from sender to recipient.
  • The probability of error is minimal.
  • Making it easier for businesses and governments to cooperate with each other.

Peppol has been around since 2008 and its use has increased significantly in recent years. In many European countries, e-invoicing via Peppol is now mandatory in transactions with government agencies. Also in the Netherlands, sending e-invoices via Peppol is mandatory for government contracts, while more and more companies are voluntarily switching to Peppol for faster and more secure invoice processing.

The role of the Dutch Peppol Authority (NPA).

To ensure that only reliable and approved companies are granted access to the Peppol network, the Dutch Peppol Authority (NPA) operates in the Netherlands. This organization inspects and certifies Access Points and oversees the safe use of the network.

Since Jan. 1, 2021, the NPA has officially taken over this task from Stichting SimplerInvoicing. This means that Access Points operating in the Netherlands must meet strict requirements in terms of security, reliability and technical standards.

What is e-invoicing and why should you use it?

E-invoicing means sending your invoices digitally in a standardized, computer-readable format, usually in XML or UBL. This offers several advantages:
